How to Improve File Quality by HandySense Handheld 3D Scanner with Accompanied Software

The HandySense handheld 3D scanner has won great reputation among users for its stable performance and easy-to-use interface since its launch. But we also noticed there are still some users who don't know much about how to use the 3D Model Process software, which is accompanied for the scanner. Here, we’d like to share detailed introductions on all its functions and buttons, and help users to know how use it to improve the quality of scanned 3D files. And finally print them out on a 3D printer.

Click and open the software on the desktop, we can see it is neat designed with button column on the left and image display area on the right. The button column includes Process and Merge at the bottom. When the software applies Process (button displays in light gray) function, the above buttons include Model, Mesh, Clip, Fill Hole, Smooth, Undo, Mirror and Export from top to bottom as below picture shows.

I - Merge for 3D Scanned Files

It’s quite common that we scan twice or more on a target object when we use a HandySense handheld 3D scanner. Then we can use the software to merge two scanned 3D files into a complete 3D model file. Of course, these files must have parts at high similarity so that the software can recognize and merge them.

Click on “Merge” button, the “Model” and “Mesh” button will turn into “Model 1” and “Model 2”, and below buttons turn into “Marker Align”, “Align” and “Merge”.

Click on Model 1 and Model 2 buttons to upload two 3D scanned files.

When we click on “Model” button, a prompt will appear and you can opt for “Local models” or “Cloud models” to open a local or cloud file.

Here we’ll example merge function with two local files of different angle scanned head model.

Click on “Align” button, the software will automatically match the features of the two facial files and merge them together.

Note: all buttons go gray while merging and turns blue after merge completed.

Above picture shows merge completed facial model

Also, we can click on “Undo” button to cancel merge function.

Check on the “Marker Align” option and the software initiates marker alignment. And the “Align” button automatically turns into “Mark” button.

Click on “Mark”, we can start marking points on the face for alignment.

Mark the first point on the left face, usually at an easy to recognize position. And accordingly, mark the first point on the right face at the same position.

Repeat above steps and mark at least 3 points on both faces as below picture.

Click on “Merge” and the software will complete merge the two faces.

The duration of merge depends on the scanning accuracies and similarities of the two 3D files. Please make sure all the points are precisely marked at the same positions for better merge. If the result is not good enough, you can repeat above steps until you get a good merged 3D file.

Click on “Export” and save the merged 3D file.

II – Process for 3D Scanned Files

We can see that there are some lost features on the scanned 3D facial model. Now we’ll use “Process” functions to improve the details of previous merged 3D facial file.

As we mentioned above, in “Process” functions, there are Model, Mesh, Clip, Fill Hole, Smooth, Undo, Mirror and Export buttons.

Click on “Model” button and upload previous merged 3D facial file.

Enlarge the file and we can see the file is actually composed by numerous points arranged in 3D format.

Click on “Mesh” and the software will match all points into a complete 3D facial image.

As above picture shows, the face looks more natural and plump after being meshed. And we also see the neck is incomplete. Then we can click on “Clip” and start to cut out the unnecessary part.

By pressing down the right button of the mouse, you can draw a red line from the left to the right, the software will automatically produce a downward arrow which indicates below part will be reserved. And this time, we’ll draw the line from the right to the left to reserve the above part as the picture shows.

Also, you can click on the right button to cancel the clip.

Click on “Complete” to save the file.

Enlarge the file again, we found the surface is a little bit coarse. Click on “Smooth” and the software will automatically smooth the surface.

And click on “Fill Hole”, the software will patch up holes on the 3D file. It provides planar and curve options. Now, we’ll try planar mode first.

As below image showed, at planar mode, the software patches up holes with several irregular composed plane surfaces.

Click on “Undo” and we also try the curve mode.

As we see, the software adds a curve surface to the hole behind the face. In comparison, the planar mode is more suitable for this 3D facial file.

Of course, if you’re not content with the result, you can repeat until you get a better result.

The 3D facial file we’re using has a large hole behind, and it’s difficult to use “Fill Hole” function to complete it. Thus we use clip function to get a flat surface at the behind of the face.

Follow “Clip” instructions and chop off unnecessary behind part. Long press down the left button of the mouse and adjust the position of the face. The behind will turn into a plane surface. Also, we can click on the while colored surface to move the face.

Ok, that’s all for today’s introduction about the 3D Model Process software for HandySense handheld 3D scanner. And please be noted that the software can be only used as an aid for improving 3D file quality. It’s better to scan the target objects carefully to obtain a more accurate 3D model file. And then, we can use the software to get a well processed 3D file for final printing on a 3D printer.
